Humayun’s Tomb

Walking through the gardens of Humayun’s Tomb, a sense of calm falls over the landscape. Somehow the awareness that just beyond the gates lies the regular hustle and bustle of Delhi life amplifies the scenic atmosphere within the walls of the complex. The trees and hedges combine to create an orderliness and a wildness that fit together in harmony. There is more than one area to explore here. On one side you see arches and a tree that has no leaves, the silhouette of its creeping branches dark against the sky. On another, you are met by the view of idyllic palm trees and flowering bushes that punctuate the path to another tomb. Front and center through another building stands Humayun’s Tomb, an architectural monument foreshadowing the design of the Taj Mahal in Agra. The steps are steep up to the upper platform and the added elevation gives you the chance to look from above at where you’ve been in the gardens.
