Midsummer’s Eve

The water was warm in the sea on Midsummer’s Eve. Storm clouds loomed not so far in the distance. The wind and waves were stronger than usual, especially compared to the stillness of days before.

The road to the shore was long and winding, one lane with cars stopping to let each other pass. The ground seemed to follow the pattern of waves on the bottom of the sea.

When we stepped out of the pine tree forest onto the grainy sand, the midsummer darkness was suddenly interrupted by small bonfires dotting the beach all the way to the horizon.

With the promise of rain and the glow of lightning in the clouds beyond the trees, the quiet beach felt frozen in time. The silence was broken only by the crashing of waves and the sound of laughter from distant camps.
